The Fortifications

The fortifications, which were built to defend Copenhagen, have now been revitalised. You can explore the history of Copenhagen’s defence in these green surroundings.

More than 200 years ago, the British attacked Copenhagen and set the town ablaze. It was a staggering defeat for the country, but also marked the beginning of discussions about how to defend the capital city in the future.

Therefore, at the end of the 1800s, a ring of fortifications based on the highly-developed military technology of the time was built around Copenhagen. Many remnants of these fortifications are still found around Copenhagen. Until now, many of these remnants have been hidden and closed to the general public. This is now changing as Copenhagen’s Fortifications is being brought back to life.
